Winter wheat is starting to drive in Illinois

Winter wheat has started on its way, according to the USDA’s first state harvest progress and condition report for 2021.

Winter wheat is rated good to excellent with 74%, more than 20 percentage points before this time last year.

The report shows that last week was nearly 4 days of field work, which allowed some corn and soybean growers to start planting.

The topsoil moisture for the state is 70% sufficient and 13% excess, with the subsoil moisture being only 11% short to very short, similar to this week in 2017.
