Iowa State Assessment Sports activities Membership Insurance policies After Crew Drown | Illinois Information

AMES, Iowa (AP) – Iowa State University plans to review its policies and procedures for 55 school sports clubs after two student crew club members drowned over the weekend, the school said Thursday.

Yaakov Ben-David, 20, a sophomore student from Washington DC, and Derek Nanni, 19, a freshman from Normal, Illinois, drowned their boat on Little Wall Lake in Hamilton County north of the Iowa State campus in Ames on Sunday , Iowa, capsized. Three other crew members were rescued.

The school’s sports clubs are largely outside of the university’s control, but after the accident the school will also create the position of sports club safety officer to work with the clubs, the school said in a press release.

The president of the crew club had raised some safety concerns in February last year and said the club should, among other things, conduct a mandatory swim test for team members, the university said.

The President of the Crew Club informed the University’s Recreational Services Department that the club needed a new dock and a new or repaired launch / bus boat. The club then ran the swim test for all team members and had raised $ 19,500 from its $ 25,000 goal to build the dock. The university announced that no start / bus boat was acquired.

The university’s review will analyze whether the school has responded appropriately to the crew club’s president’s concerns, the press release said.

The student government largely stopped funding capital projects such as docks and boats for most student organizations a few years ago. Student organizations like the Crew Club had to rely on fundraisers or membership fees to fund capital projects, the university said.

The university’s review will also analyze whether the current level of autonomy for sports clubs is appropriate and whether it provides the right level of support and control.

USRowing, a nonprofit group that is the national rowing association, will be conducting a safety review of the accident and the Iowa State Crew Club’s safety guidelines.

The club has decided not to practice, compete, or conduct any other activities until the review is complete.

This story has been corrected to show that Iowa State University is reviewing its sports club guidelines, not the University of Iowa.
